OVERVIEW
The FIAA will be presenting a four-day fire investigation training seminar in Edmonton, Alberta. Robert Schaal, Steve Carman and Dan Heenan will be providing classroom instruction on Advanced Fire Investigation.
The course will introduce and reinforce investigation protocols, techniques and principals related to Fire Dynamics and assist the students in understanding fire investigation.
SPEAKERS
Robert J. Schaal CFI
ATF Senior Special Agent
Robert J. Schaal has been a Special Agent with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives since July 1987. He is currently the Supervisor of an Arson and Explosives Group in New Orleans, Louisiana. He previously managed the ATF Arson Training programs and has served as an instructor at numerous IAAI chapter training seminars and has instructed at several international seminars. He has served on the Board of Directors for the IAAI and is currently the President of the IAAI
Daniel P. Heenan, CFI
ATF Senior Special Agent
Senior Special Agent Daniel P. Heenan is a twenty year veteran with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. He is currently assigned as a Certified Fire Investigator, a position that he has held with ATF for the past 12 years. S/A Heenan is currently stationed at the ATF Las Vegas Field Office. He graduated from the University of Nevada with a BA in Criminal Justice. He is a member of the ATF National and International Response Teams and has been a member of the team for the past ten years.
S/A Heenan travels extensively teaching fire investigation throughout the United States and internationally. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of the International Association of Arson Investigators.
Steven W. Carman
ATF Senior Special Agent (retired)
Steve Carman is the owner of Carman & Associates Fire Investigation based in Dunsmuir, California. He served as a Special Agent with ATF from 1988 to 2008 during which time he was assigned to the Sacramento and Redding, California, offices. He received his certification as an ATF Certified Fire Investigator in 1993.
Mr. Carman has investigated several hundred fires with more than 70 fire deaths and average fire losses of more than $1,000,000. He has lectured internationally on various aspects of fire science and investigation including fire dynamics, fire chemistry, and fire modeling. Because of his scientific background and work with fire chemistry and physics, Mr. Carman has focused much of his work and research towards the study of “unusual” fire behaviour and its recognition during investigations. His most recent work has revolved around efforts to simplify the understanding of post-flashover fire behaviour for the fire investigation community.
Mr. Carman serves on the Board of Directors of the International Association of Arson Investigators.

Late registration will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis.
Registration includes seminar course materials, continental refreshments, and lunch. No refunds after March 27th 2010.
Payment must accompany the registration form.
No purchase orders. No walk-ins.
The non-member registration fee for the seminar includes membership with the Fire Investigation Association of Alberta.
PLEASE NOTE:
Students will be required to bring their own protective safety equipment including appropriate respiratory protection. Safety gear will have to be worn while performing investigative functions in the burn cells.
NFPA 921 Guide for Fire and Explosion Investigation 2008 Edition will be referenced throughout the course; therefore, students will be required to have this reference document on hand. Students will be able to purchase the NFPA 921 from the FIAA for $80.00.
